I’m still getting over the fact that I found this in a charity shop around the corner from me for £5. I’m hoping that I’ll go in there next week and find some wonderful vintage hat blocks in their craft corner.
It may look like an instrument of torture, but it is actually a smocking pleater.
You thread up the needles, feed a piece of fabric through and it comes out the other side all lovely, pleated, and if you are so inclined, ready to be smocked (personally, I’m a fan of just the pleating bit).
Sally Stanley is her official title by the way, not something I made up. It was assigned to her by the manufacturers and doesn’t derive from some strange need I might have to name my pieces of equipment.
Hang on though, that’s actually rather a nice idea….
